E4Quality on the Road International Award – Announcement

What does the word travel mean?

To leave one reality and land into another one which is unknown.

To go see with your own eyes. Or to quote Proust, to look at the world with new eyes.

To start and adventure.

Since the eighteenth century, the education of young people involved a Grand Tour;perhaps for this reason many painters and poets have chosen over the centuries the voluntary exile in distant islands to fully release their genius. It is no coincidence that some of the best description of our country can be found inGoethe’s Italian Journey, some of the most amazing stories of Patagonia and Berber’s desert have been described by the words of Bruce Chat win and some of the best paintings of Antilles were realized by the hand of a French traveller as Gauguin.

But what does it mean to travel in the Digital Age?

In the Digital Age you still have to say goodbye to loved ones and familiar surroundings to re-discover yourself in new worlds, different ways of living and unfamiliar forms of art and culture. But you have more means to share it with others and tell your own personal tale.

This means that millions of people have the potential to travel online with and through you, from the comfort of their own sofa. The travel tale, which as a genre goes as far as the Odyssey, transforms into a new way of expression with hundred million views on YouTube,Instagram, Snapchat…. And it is followed by thousands of young people with diverse background from all over the world.

This passion for traveling and discovering, it often translates in a world-wide trend of newer generations being more and more interested about new places, curious about how things are done differently, where they come from or how they are made.

New generations also have a growing interest towards ecology and sustainability, they are curious about production methods and they want to be informed about what they consume.

This is what the E4Quality on the Road aims to do, by taking 20 young people (aged 18-30) to Piedmont, in Northern Italy to introduce them to some of the excellences in wine & food, through an informed traveling experience.  The purpose is to connect two apparently irreconcilable worlds: on one side the “European youth”, who is highly technological and accustomed to the speed of language and the connection of urban contexts; on the other side, the slow and millenary pace of wine making and PDO cheese production.

WhatE4quality on the road would like to see, is how this process of “understanding new things” can be documented in new and creative ways through Photography,Short-movies, Video log and Stories. These young creatives would have new points of view and ideas on how to tell an “old story” in a way that would resonate with their peer.

In fact, high-quality agricultural products, potentially represent a tangible interest for this young demographic, which, with adequate promotion, can become an excellent market segment of informed consumers.

The idea behind E4quality is for young reporters to document the beginning of their journey, starting from their own city,to the hills of Monferrato, the land of Barbera d’Asti or the Castelmagno mountains; up to establishments where Toma Piemontese is made.

They will have the opportunity to discover Piedmont, through flavours and local products, meeting producers and makers, following the production phases and the slow aging of wine and cheese; they will go through vineyards, production labs, fields and stables, together with those that everyday, in Piedmont, produce quality.

Then, they can share their stories with their own country, through social media. In fact, entries to this contest will become what is needed on social networks to reach and connect digital communities in these countries; they will be used on the project’ website and they will be shown to professionals in the sector during specific events curated by Ian D’Agata that will take place in Germany, Sweden and Denmark. The purpose is to spark a debate between producers and foreign wine & food professionals, to develop new grounded strategies and to define the market segmentation for these products in order to increase their promotion.
